Especially since ecosystems like Steam, Xbox and PlayStation have access to thousands of other games and tie your purchases to accounts you know you’ll still have access to on other devices in the future. But with the absolutely most expensive game consoles currently topping out at $750, and these games likely to run fine on a PC or laptop you can get for much less, buying a VCS to play them seems ill-advised. I want to stress that all these games are very much up my specific rose-tinted alley, and they play great on the VCS. A decent array of video streaming apps are here too, although they’re not well optimised for controller use. There’s a version of Google Chrome installed which performs very well when paired with the VCS smartphone app for typing and pointing. In HD the VCS’ system software is clean and pretty, with a homescreen that makes your app and game tiles look like a series of lightboxes, and an online store that feels similar to any modern console. The system comes with a ‘vault’ of more than 100 very old games.
